This small campground has sites available for $15 a night on a first come first serve basis only. There is no water available at this campground. Tables and fire grates are at each site. A toilet is in the parking lot adjacent to the Hermosa Creek Trailhead. The parking lot is large enough for vehicles and horse trailers
The Lower Hermosa campground is located 14 miles northwest of Durango. Take Hwy. 550 north from Durango. Turn west at Hermosa and take Forest Rd. 576 to the campground.
I did not camp here, but I did enjoy a handful of miles on the trail.
There's something unbelievably amazing about hiking through a Grove of mature ponderosa pines. Even though a fire went through a number of years ago, there was still Stark and rugged beauty in the landscape. The charred remains of the fire added a reminder that life has a cycle.
It's important to note, that the ponderosa pine only germinates (its seeds) after a forest fire. If there is no fire, then the forest will eventually die, it will not regenerate unless there is a fire.
The unbelievable amount of tree regeneration was stunning. The deciduous oaks, and the new pine growth were evident, this is truly a healthy forest, and it is wonderful that the fire came through to begin the cycle of forest life once again.
Quiet campground, no reservations, not crowded but have to bring your water
