Nice Shelter! An Awesome View Of Burke’s Garden! Nicknamed “ God’s Thumbprint “ The Highest Elevated Valley In Virginia! I’m Going To Help Maintain This Beautiful Shelter and View!
Awesome spot on a somewhat lesser known section of the Appalachian Trail with a good view of Burkes Garden. Good place to get out of the weather as the shelter has four walls and a door. But the best views of all are from the large meadow on the ridgeline about ¾ of a mile farther south on the Appalachian Trail.
Great place to stop while thru or section hiking the AT. Spent a cold night in November here while section hiking NOBO. Went to sleep listening to rain and sleet on the tin roof, thankful I was indoors in a solid concrete block structure with a door and a roof. Room for 8 or so, with five bunks and one platform. There's a picnic table inside that must have been hauled inside in pieces and reconstructed. Great view into Burke's Valley just outside the shelter, and a decent privy. Water is a bit down the hill to the south. If NOBO, bring water from the spring by the pond. Camping in the woods just to the north, or in the big field around the shelter.
Nice enclosed shelter. Bunked platforms for beds. Group of garter snakes by door but harmless. Picnic table outside. Great views. Trail is VERY overgrown and hard to hike through.
