About Campground

Obsidian Campground offers opportunity to get away from crowds amidst shade of aspens and pines. Campground is close to Molybdenite Creek and Little Walker River. The river is stocked with trout. Area trailheads offer several interesting hikes. The trail from Molybdenite Creek trailhead splits, with one branch heading south into the Hoover Wilderness, and one looping north along Wheeler Creek to connect with the trail along the Little Walker River. This can be hiked as a loop from Burt Canyon trailhead (just west of campground). The Emma Lake trailhead leads to a short but steep hike to Emma Lake on the shores of Mount Emma.

Generally open in late May to mid October, weather and condition permitting.

Directions

1\. From Highway 395 south in Bridgeport, drive approximately 16 miles to Little Walker Road.

2\. Turn left on Little Walker Road (Forest Service Road # 066). Go approximately three miles on that unpaved road to campground sign.

Inaccessible by vehicle now, something trenched the roads. Takes about a 1 mile hike, but too far to carry any loads. Bring water and sun protection! Tons of bugs. Very picked over with some small things left to find. Highly recommend getting obsidian at the location about 30 miles northwest. Apache tears there too. This location isnt worth it.

Very cool. Go further around the area and past the sign to find clouded obsidian. Photos are from just a little bit further in the area

The mapped beds contain beautiful mahogany obsidian. There are other obsidian outcrops in the area with a variety of types. Many sites are visible in Google Maps satellite view. If you like nice rock specimens, this is a great place to visit. Most of the area roads are good enough for passenger cars in dry weather, but keep an eye out for rocks and washouts.

Beautiful place, the roads are muddy during the winter but we still had a good time. Don't take the first right the gps said to take about 5 miles down the dirt road, it took us to a pretty difficult road to traverse even in our SUV. We ended up turning around and taking a left. Lots of incredible mahogany obsidian.

This was a really fun location! Most of what we found at the pinned site was regular black obsidian and some beautiful mahogany obsidian! We only found a handful of pieces of snowflake obsidian here, but if you drive down the road a bit longer, then you’ll find a huge spot of snowflake obsidian as well as another pit that has a boatload of larger pieces of black and mahogany pieces! And this one has the actual obsidian in the wall too, so you can dig some out yourself if you’d like! The beginning of the trip was very cool, and there was cloud cover. But it got a lot more hot later in the day! Bring sunscreen, hats, tools, lots of water! It was a lot of fun! I will definitely go back once I’m done tumbling the harvest I got out there yesterday! Great spot and we only saw one other pair of people!
