Please check website for actual open/close dates. It is weather dependent.
The campground is composed of two loops, winding around the boulders, slabs and cliffs of the Vedauwoo rock formation which comprises 10 square miles of weathered Sherman granite. There are 28 campsites with tables, fire rings, trash pick up and vault toilets. This area is constructed to blend in with the natural beauty of the surroundings. The vegetation is a variety of Limber pine, Engleman spruce, Douglas fir and Aspen. The general area was once used as a hideout for outlaws. Native Americans thought playful spirits piled up the boulders. All the tent sites are walk-ins and some of them are so secluded, one might feel the "outlaw's spirit." There is access to rock climbing and a nature trail through the rocks. It is located in the Pole Mountain area and is managed by the Laramie Ranger District.
From Laramie, WY, at the intersection of US Rt. 287 and Interstate 80 (Exit 313), take Interstate 80 east 15.8 to Vedauwoo Rd. (Exit 329). Take Exit 329 to stop sign and turn left onto Vedauwoo Rd. and go 1.2 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign and go 0.3 miles to campground.
Great camping here. No water available. Lots of nice sites available when we arrived.
Rolled into the site (first come, first served) during Cheyenne's "Frontier Days- we were far enough from Cheyenne where it didn't seem to affect the activity at Veedawoo. There is a $5 fee per day (bring cash), or you could also park just outside the fee area where most climbers park (continue to the dirt road) and make your way in from there. There are restrooms (pit toilets) cleaned twice a week, and a trash dumpster (if full, please take your trash with you). The dumpster was overfilled so the bear proof lids weren't closed. Climbing routes are plentiful for the avid crack climber (the majority range from 5.7-5.10, but there are outliers). Great views of the teams attempting various routes (bring binoculars). Beware the chipmunks, however. They are some if the bravest and most determined I've seen- one decided to use my body to jump off if the table.
Road was paved and decent enough to take a travel trailer and rollerblade. Low slope. Kids loved it. Could have spent a few days exploring all the caves and hidden campsites. A beautiful and fun stop!
Loved the area, loved the way everything was set up. Self check in as long as there is a space you're good. The scenery was gorgeous. Got cold and windy at night.
This is an absolutely beautiful campground in Eastern Wyoming! It's primitive camping so there's no electricity or plumbing on site but the views are stunning. Every site has a fire ring & picnic table. The registration is kind of confusing since there is nobody on site to help. It's done on the honor system & campground personnel only come out a couple times a week to clean restrooms & pick up registrations. Make sure you bring cash to pay for registration since there is no way to use credit or debit cards. This campground is a great place to do some hiking, rock climbing, & scenic photography though. Like I said before, the views are beautiful!
