Located on a sparkling 110-acre lake, the East Twin Campground is a known family favorite. The area provides access to a beautiful portion of the Chequamegon National Forest in northwestern Wisconsin.
A variety of recreational activities are available, including fishing, boating and swimming on the adjacent lake. A boat ramp is located about a half-mile east of the campground, providing access to East Twin Lake and also features a walk-in portage to West Twin lake which is located just outside the campground. Largemouth bass and pan fish are akin to the body of water, as well as an occasional musky or other freshwater species.
Miles of hiking and mountain bike trails are located nearby and just down the road is an established Blue Heron rookery.
The campground offers several single family campsites for tent and RV camping with many located on the lake. East Twin campground offers two tent walk-in sites for those looking for a somewhat more secluded camping experience. Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. Trash collection and an aluminum can recycling bin are also available at the campground.
The campground is situated in a maple, birch and hemlock forest, with many sites overlooking the lake. A variety of birds and wildlife, including elk, eagles, loons, blue heron and other species, make their homes near the campground.
The Dead Horse Run trailhead is located just five miles south on County Road GG.
Drive 4 miles north from Clam Lake on County Highway GG. Turn right (east) on Forest Road 190 and continue for about one mile to the campground.
Nice views in the middle of nowhere. Busy campground is great for families, but not the secluded tent camping we were hoping for. Still, easy access to local towns and a nice lake for great summer water activities makes it an easy place to recommend.
A family get together for a weekend of camping here is always fun. The campsite is typically left pretty clean and experiences with the camp site are great. Horse flys and mosquitoes can get bad but the wind can usually be found which keeps them at bay. The toilets are pit but they do have running water if you have a camper. I'd recommend to anyone to stay here
A small, scenic rustic campground. Grounds and facilities are well maintained, vault toilet buildings were clean through our entire stay. Water is available from a solar well; it tasted fine and appeared clear. All roads within and leading to the campground are paved.
The onsite host here for the 2021 season is a class act. You won't come across many people with his level of interest in each and every facet of infrastructure that goes into a national forest recreation site. He has a great love for the national forest and puts an incredible amount of care and energy into the two campgrounds he hosts. He's also advocating to get two nearby idled campgrounds - Mineral Lake and Lake 3 - reopened.
East Twin has one walk-in site that's both spacious and secluded from the rest of the campground. It has very nice lake frontage, as do most sites here.
All sites have ample spacing and vegetation between one another except site 8 and 9. Sites 7 through 9 would make a good spot for a group gathering if booked all at once.
East Twin Lake is swimmable. The bottom turns from sand to silt as you get a ways out from shore, but at that point the depth increases quickly enough that it's not an issue. Depending on the time of year and the wind speed or direction, you may encounter some algae suspended in the water that sticks to your skin. It's nothing that can't be washed off and this only happened to us on one of the multiple days we went into the water. The waterfront seemed most suitable for swimming at sites 7 through 10.
Found this place on a foggy evening in the autumn. Decided I had to come back in the summer.
One of the nicest lackfront camping i have seen
Simple amenities like pit toilets, drinking water, picnic tables and fire rings.
The host knows the area well and is full of great suggestions.
Excelent location for bike camping.
Do not confuse with twin lake campground.
It's a small campground, a single family could book 3 sites and host a reunion.
Watch for turtle nesting in mid june
2020 Annual Family Camping Trip could not have been any better staying at this quiet, well maintained campground! We stayed at site 5. The lake was right there basically 100 feet from the fire ring. Drinking water available just on the other side of the tents. The bathroom just down around the corner. Easy to walk to. The dock at site 5 needs some repairs but we were able to talk with the forestry and show them what we would like to see done with the dock and they were very understanding and said they would put a call in to get it fixed. We will DEFINITELY be visiting this campground again!
