A well-maintained family campground with a reasonably nice swimming beach. A hiking trail accessible directly from the campground provides a lengthy hike looping Black Lake.
This seems to be a popular campground; on a stormy late-August weekend, about 80 percent of sites were occupied.
Three walk-in sites are a highlight here. They're located a short distance from the bulk of the drive-in campsites, providing a quiet and private setting for campers willing to carry their gear several hundred feet from their vehicles. All are located directly on the lake.
Black Lake is a perfect size for canoeing or kayaking, large enough to make it worth your while putting in a boat and small enough to moderate strong winds. It's entire shore appears to be encompassed by undeveloped national forestland.
One of the best camping spots we’ve been to in a while. Had an awesome spot right on the water with space for the dogs to swim and a big, open site for us to set up and relax. Hosts were really kind as well.
Only 45 minutes from Hayward too should you need to get back to reality (and cell service) at all.
Lol at the fishing comment. Clearly not an outdoorsman if they can't enjoy their time at this place. If you find yourself here longer than 4 hours you will be happy you stayed. Yes, there are mosquitoes, and you might not catch 100 fish in the first few hours, it's called fishing, not catching. There are few campgrounds in the area as special as this one. All the sites are on the lake. Very private. We saw an elk last time we were there! Kids love coming here. No noise no traffic just the woods. Very peaceful. If you are a cranky fisherman there is a small pond that's always stocked outside the fishing hall of fame. For everyone that's decent go to black lake you'll be happy you did.
Booked 2 nights and was hoping for some awesome fishing experience but caught nothing but one blue gill. Very disappointed. We ended up packing and leaving 4 hours after setting up.
Pros: Bathrooms were clean. Spacious for sites along the lake. Host on site (Though he/she wasn't there when we checked in to buy firewoods. Left money in the box).
Cons: No fish. Lots, LOTS of mosquitoes!! Bring extra bug sprays!!!
Beautiful campground with many campsites on the lake. Super quiet and peaceful. Each site has a little path to get onto the trail that goes around the lake and a path to get down to the water. Every site also has a fire pit. There’s one water pump on site that requires a little bit of force but works well. Bathrooms were clean and tidy. First come first served are mixed within the reservable sites. $15 per night or $7.50 with discount pass. The lake was gorgeous but the hiking path around it was very overgrown and muddy so I couldn’t really get too far.
