From this trailhead you can access much of the Great Gulf Wilderness Area. The Great Gulf trail follows the West Branch of the Peabody River through the Great Gulf Wilderness, climbing the steep and rough headwall, and ends at the junction with the Gulfside Trail 0.5 mi. below the summit of Mt. Washington.
Trailhead is located on the west side of NH Route 16, about 1.5 mi. south of the junction with Dolly Copp Rd.
Recreation fee charged. See fee schedule.
Not an easy trail and neither a pretty trail.rains made it much harder
Great place to go hiking and camping. WMNF Fee parking area. Cross the Suspention Bridge and follow the Peabody River into the Great Gulf to enjoy your Wilderness Experience in the Gulf. Pick one of the many trails that lead out of the Great Gulf to reach the summits of the Northern Presidentials. There are camping spots along the way that are marked with small signs. All the buildings have been removed so bring your shovel for a cat hole when you need the bathroom. Tents sites are first come first choice.
I did an out and back hike for a total of about 6 mi. You could access Mount Washington by continuing on this trail. The best part for me was when the trail came close to the river stopping and stretching out on the bank in the sun for a few minutes and watching the water go by.
