About Campground

This picnic area is located at an elevation of 3,200 feet near the top of Round Knob in Greene County. A pavilion with a fireplace provides an excellent group gathering area. Evidence of nature's fury can be seen along the road. Look for fire scarred trees from the 1988 Davis Creek Fire and damage from a 1996 wind storm.

Directions

From Greeneville, take TN 350 south to the Camp Creek community and continue on the county road about two miles. Turn right on Forest Road 88 and travel five miles. The road dead ends at Round Knob.

This is NOT a campground (despite several reviewers saying it is); it’s a picnic area that’s many miles up a carved-into-the-side-of-a-mountain single-car dirt road. DO NOT try to bring an RV or trailer up here or you will get stuck.

The dirt road can be managed in a regular car—no need for 4WD/AWD or a bunch of ground clearance.

If you go for a picnic/hike/views, this is a really great spot. If you like a challenging hike, there’s a trail that connects this picnic area to the Stone Forge Campground (where you can actually camp, but all sites are walk-in from the parking lot, so no campers/trailers there either—unless you leave them in the parking lot).

NOTE: Local bear hunters use this spot as a staging area and place to run/train their dogs, so it’s best to steer clear during bear hunting season if your not a bear hunter.

The road is dangerous, 5 miles of gravel road, single lane with few pull offs, the facility is run down and not maintained. I would only access park with ATV or motorcycle with on / off road tires. It has beautiful views and access to trail systems like all the smokey mountain parks have but there are plenty of better accessible places to enjoy them.
