Snyder Guard Station is located in beautiful Snyder Basin, 22 miles west of Big Piney, Wyoming. The cabin makes an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike, mountain bike, horseback ride or fish. Photographers are enchanted by the region's landscape and opportunities for wildlife watching. Open year-round, the cabin provides a horse corral for equestrian campers and allows pets as well. Winter access is by snowmobile, snowshoes or cross-country skis on a 10-mile trail. Recreation The Wyoming Range National Recreation Trail can be accessed nearby within the basin, offering exciting hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding opportunities. Nearby streams provide trout fishing. In winter months, nearly 100 miles of snowmobile trails are open for exploring. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are other popular cold weather activities. Facilities The rustic log cabin sleeps four people and has propane heat and propane lights. A wood burning stove was installed in 2018 to help with the heat. A vault toilet is located outside next to the building. Two bunk beds with mattresses are provided, as well as two dressers, a cabinet, and two chairs. The kitchen is equipped with a propane cook stove, a variety of cookware and utensils, a table with four chairs, a refrigerator and a sink. No electricity is available, guests must bring their own supply of water for drinking and cooking. Natural Features The cabin sits in a grassy meadow surrounded by pine trees at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The cabin compound provides views of picturesque peaks including Riley Ridge. Moose, elk, eagles and sandhill cranes are among the wildlife likely to be seen. An abundance of wildflowers color the landscape in summer. The Bridger-Teton National Forest offers more than 3.4 million acres of public lands for outdoor recreation. With its pristine watersheds, abundant wildlife and immense wildlands, the forest comprises a large part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the largest intact ecosystem in the lower 48. From Kemmerer, WY, take US-189 north for 68.5 miles to Big Piney. Turn left onto State Highway 350 (main street in Big Piney), heading west from Big Piney. After about 10 miles, the pavement ends and the road forks. Take the left fork on Fish Creek Rd and drive about 12.5 miles. Shortly after crossing South Piney Creek, there is a "Y" intersection. Take the right fork and travel about 0.5 mile to the guard station. The bunkhouse is on the left.
Great place to get away and relax. The cabin used to have well water and electricity but no more. Now it is equipped with a propane heater and propane lanterns. Only one in the kitchen worked during our visit. Make sure to bring a grill lighter or two. And some extra toilet paper as there was none in the bathroom. There was some in the cabin and we left some extra. The road in from big piney is a little rough but anything with a little clearance can make it fine. Lots of area to explore by foot or vehicle!
Nice relaxing weekend getaway. Love that the Forest service rents these cabins out. Definitely rustic with some modern perks (propane heater, stove, lighting, furniture). The pit toilet was clean (though short on paper). There was quite a bit of through traffic but nothing crazy.
