About Campground

Shenandoah National Park has 196,000+ acres of backcountry and wilderness and over 500 miles of trails to explore. Backcountry camping is, by its very nature, a primitive experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and challenge of Shenandoah's wild side. Before you head out on your trip, however, be sure that you understand all of the information below so that you'll be prepared to safely discover a brand new world beyond the pavement!

All sites are within 5-8 miles of Skyline Drive, starting from mile 21 in the North District. All are near creeks (runs) and completely undeveloped. Check with the Visitor Center for permits and camping regulations within the park. Many, but not all trails, allow dogs.

Amazing skyline with a wonderful view. The best time to view fall foliage would be at the end of October. There a great many trails for hiking. Also a lot of picnic areas and overlooks. You have to pay an entrance fee which is good through 7 days.

The skyline is 120 miles, if I’m correct and it’s has tons of scenic overlooks. We were lucky enough to see some wildlife, sunset and full moon. The entrance free is $30 and eligible for 7 days, so it’s important to keep the receipt close.

I went here to take a ride along Skyline Drive and it was absolutely gorgeous! There are plenty of overlooks to stop by and enjoy the views. During the fall, it is so beautiful! The park is very clean and well maintained. Definitely will come here again for a weekend day trip. This is a perfect place for a day trip from around the DC area.

We drive here every year, and the scenery never gets old! It's voted one of the top 5 places to visit for change of leaves in the US. I highly recommend going during the week if you can, to avoid the major traffic on the weekend. If you must go on weekend, plan to get there when the park opens. This is your best chance to get into the park early enough to enjoy a full day there. Weekdays allow you to take your time with very little traffic. Best overlook spots start at Front Royal entrance. Cost to enter is per vehicle and not per person and you can re-enter up to 7 days on the receipt without having to pay again! So keep track of your receipt! Bring your lunch and a blanket for a great picnic. They also have plenty of picnic tables at certain rest stops. You can also purchase food at certain locations along the drive. Great outing for the family of all ages, especially those with limited mobility (since most of your time spent will be in the car and at overlooks). Wonderful hiking spot (part of the Appalachian trail.

I have frequently visited Shenandoah National Park over the past couple of years, and it is always an absolutely breathtaking experience! From the moment I entered the park, the friendly and knowledgeable rangers made me feel welcome and provided valuable information to enhance my visit.

Skyline Drive is truly a marvel, offering stunning panoramic views that left me in awe of the natural beauty surrounding me. The winding roads and scenic overlooks provided countless opportunities for memorable photos and moments of quiet reflection. The park's maintenance and cleanliness were also impressive, making for a comfortable and enjoyable drive.

One of the highlights of my visit was the ample hiking opportunities that Shenandoah National Park has to offer. The trails leading to mountain tops and river valleys provided a perfect blend of challenge and reward. The diverse ecosystems and wildlife along the way made each hike a unique and enriching experience.
