We spent the spring/summer traveling around the U.S. using K.O.A. campgrounds and this was by far the worst that we experienced. I did a review after leaving, on their website and they blocked it. I emailed the manager there as I was advised by K.O.A. and I never got a response. My advice to anyone thinking about the outer banks, avoid this campground if you want an enjoyable experience. From what I found ( after) staying at K.O.A. west, K.O.A. east is a MUCH BETTER PLACE. Let's see if K.O.A. west blocks this review.
We had a wonderful time at this campground. Staff was more than helpful and the campground was clean and well maintained.
We were parked backing the water and was nice to be able to walk down to the pier and go into the water.
The campground store and ice cream shop were terrific and the staff that was running it were great; I think his name was Dan.
The only issue we had was another family would literally walk right through our site multiple times to go visit others in the cabins; this is not the campgrounds fault. Just inconsiderate people who don’t observe campground rules.
We will definitely come back!
Me and my wife stayed here on a quick last minute let's go type trip.
My God!!! Constant dogs barking. Golf carts beeping!! People laughing and being loud!! The smell of bbq and charcoal grilling everywhere.... EVERYWHERE!!!.
everyone was waving and friendly!!! Who does that??!!!
We had a amazing time and a even better time reading prior poor reviews. I wish businesses could review their customers. This camp ground is nothing short of AMAZING!! if your reading the poor reviews and agree with the level of unrealistic those piss poor excuse of campers are you may want to book at the Hyatt regency. We will be back over and over and over. We enjoy the sound of the American campground. Bugs sap dogs and kids being just that ... dogs and kids!
End of the day this is camping people. Don't let common sense elude you.
This place is super friendly and a true coastal treasure! Thank you for existing koa west!
The KOA team really made our stay great! Dan and Victoria went above and beyond to make sure our stay was comfortable and our 4 legged kids felt welcome. Tim shared a lot for knowledge and was a great help with the water equipment. We loved our stay and will come back again soon!
The Happy Jack's restaurant made it convient to grab a tasty snack or dinner since this location is further out.
The kayaks and paddle boards are an awesome amenity! Being on the sound and having somewhere to swim was nice in the heat.
This is a beautiful campground. The good comments from other campers are mostly true. Friendly staff. Scenic location. Well maintained.
There are 2 downsides that KOA can not correct. That "sewage" smell is not sewage. It is the smell of decaying plant matter. That old bog black mud smell. It can be strong along the shore.
Then there are the bugs. The ones we experienced that covered up everything one day are apparently seasonal. Pesky but a fogger will disperse them, so come prepared.
We enjoyed our stay. Set your expectations, and you will too.
