To really enjoy the Northwood’s try camping at one of Oconto’s two great campgrounds. Not technically allowed, but my pup loves to come, when no one else is here, to play fetch in the field by the museum ❤️
I was not a huge fan of this state park. Sure, there is historical significance with the 4500 year old Native American cemetery, but it's not a destination worth traveling to if you aren't from more than 20 minutes away.
This is a very small State Park in while it does have some nice pads and picnic areas the most interesting attraction to us is the copper culture Museum that helped us learn about a civilization in the area from over 7,500 years ago. The man working in the museum was very knowledgeable and friendly. He has been working with the project for over 40 years and gave our kids some souvenir ancient pieces of copper. The museum is small but has some Hands-On exhibits and lots of photographs. There is also Ascent of short videos to learn about the ancient culture.
Beautiful Christmas lights every year. I have been going to see them since I was 12, and it gets bigger and more beautiful every year. The people who put the effort into this are awesome.
Great little state park for a quick stop with some smaller trails and a really nice museum with plenty to see. They also have a nice picnic area with running water and grills and restrooms with running water which can be hard to find at a lot of parks. As for the museum they talk about how the people of the area were the first in the area to work with making tools and using copper as well as there trade routes and how it was distributed in the US.
