Surrounded by water birch, cottonwood, and Russian olive trees at the mouth of a canyon along a creek. Stream runs through the campground. Generally open May to October, as weather and conditions allow. Access to Kingston Canyon and Groves Lake. High clearance vehicle needed.
Big Creek Campground is located about one mile west of Austin. Take US 50 West. Approximately one mile from Austin, take the Big Creek Campground turnoff. Continue south for 12 miles on Forest Service Road 002.
Nice campground, not very big, but good base camp for hitting the trails. Bring your off-road rides. Lots of trails to explore. Other places above the main campground to put up tents or good trailer with high clearance.
Very nice campground with great sites and views. Very well maintained and sometimes has live entertainment.
This was a pleasant surprise! The road takes you back off the highway quite a ways so that can be a little scary. But, the road was in good condition. I wish there were a few more signs early on to ensure we were going the right way. Beautiful area! Running water, amazing lighting on the surrounding mountains. Only about 12 sites. When we were there, only one other couple was camping.
Camp site was quiet, clean, with a creek running through the camp site and the campground was at the end of the road where past it requires 4X4 vehicles. As soon as the sun comes out it gets hot, however of you have a canopy, you will be comfortable in the shade. At night it cools down and feels really nice and you don't have to worry about being too cold in the month of July.
