If you are driving from Omaha on I-29 to Sioux city, take Hwy 20 to Hwy 12, then 2 miles west of Niobrara, if traveling from the west on Hwy 12, Niobrara State Park is about 10 miles from the town of Verdel on Hwy 12.
Just returned from a trip to Niobrara State Park. We stayed in cabin #8 which has a wonderful view off to the east. This park has views for miles, amazing sunrises and sunsets and plenty to do for adults and kids, alike.
Two critical flaws kept me from giving a five-star rating. 1. The cabins do not have fire pits. They do have outdoor grills, but these are no substitute for a "real" fire pit. 2. Whoever determined the placement of the two cross pieces in the windows of the screened porch (first photo) didn't take into account the average height of a seated adult. The top cross piece blocked the river from view. I'm pretty sure I understand the purpose of the cross pieces (to keep people from sitting in the window sills and leaning against the screens), but the same thing could have been accomplished without blocking the view.
Beyond that, a lovely, scenic park with neat and tidy cabins, tent & RV camping and even a swimming pool.
One final note, if you plan to hike down to the old railroad bridge, you'll need to change your plans. The bridge appears to have been washed away and "death and injury" signs are posted at the trailhead.
The state of Nebraska knows how to do state parks. This one is vast, beautiful, historical, a place to remove yourself from a busy, day-to-day life and relax in a genuinely peaceful and scenic surroundings. The cabin rentals are designed with privacy in mind. Each cabin is laid out to provide a beautiful view of the park and nothing else. There are spectacular views of the Missouri River from the bluffs and all of the hiking trails are well maintained . When I did see other humans theevery single one looked happy and at rest. One of the nicest stays I've ever had at a state park.
Cabins could use some maintenance, camper spots are kinda tight , great tent spots though!! Views are absolutely beautiful and it's a very peaceful area. Wildlife is pretty abundant as well.
Beautiful state park at Niobrara, Missouri Rivers. Great scenic views of both river valleys, views of Nebraska/ South Dakota. Lots to see at night as well, very little light pollution. Pool was a treasure in the heat. Horseback riding was a treasure to the park as well as riding through the hills & valleys. Nice secluded tent areas with out houses, fire pit & tables. Great hiking trails. Park staff very friendly, helpful. Well worth it for our family to experience. Looking forward to another trip in the future.
