Great shelter! You get what you pay for...a roof over your head on top of a mountain. Very nice to have access to the clean water pump at the Lodge and the public bathroom at the Lodge (pit toilet in a outhouse with toilet paper provided). Cell service (AT&T) is available on the trail towards the lodge, at the lodge, and hiking up to the cliff tops. Was able to send texts, pictures, and make phone calls.
The hike is not bad take it slow and steady always wins the race but great for the views and a nice little hike sunspots do you get a little steep but well worth it at the end
I love Mt LeConte, and I usually go each February to stay a night. Crowds are low and the shelter is the only way to go. Why pay so much to rent a cabin with 2 meals when you can get a cheap reservation at the shelter! Only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 because you can't build a fire anymore. A fire would be nice on these cold February nights, but had to settle for some hot chocolate. Love my national parks!
Beautiful place with reserved overnight accommodations. Alum Bluff Trail is about 5 miles to Le Conte. Go .7 miles further to Myrtle Point for some really nice views. Rainbow Falls Trail also leads to Le Conte but longer in hiking.
Great hike up to the shelter. Check out the cliff top which is a short distance from the shelter.
