4700-foot elevation, in the Highwoods Mountains. 12 campsites. Fishing for brook and rainbow trout in Briggs Creek and Thain Creek. Hike up to Windy Mountain and back on a 6-mile loop trail for a great view of the surrounding plains and faraway mountains. Other hikes are along Briggs Creek or from the nearby North Fork Highwood Creek Trailhead. **Bears may frequent the area; keep all food out of sight in approved containers and remove all food from area after eating. Mandatory food storage is required.**
From Great Falls, MT, take US Rt. 89 east 3.3 miles to Highwood/State Rt. 228 sign. At sign, turn left onto State Rt. 228 and go 13.9 miles to stop sign. Continue straight onto gravel and dirt roadway, following Thain Creek signs, and go 10.1 miles to "T" intersection. Turn right, following Thain Creek signs, and go 7.2 miles to "Y" intersection. Bear left and go 1.1 miles to Recreation Area sign. Continue straight another 0.3 miles to campground.
