Pere Marquette National Scenic River This river access is on the flies only, catch and release portion of the river. The river bottom is mostly gravel and is a very good area for brown trout. The path to the river borders posted private land on one side before reaching the stairs to the river. The stairs to the river are steep, and will be a workout for those who make the attempt. The pine and oak forest is a good area for wildlife watching and visitors may see a deer or two while heading to the river. From Baldwin - Travel west on 52nd. St. for .25 miles. Turn left and travel south on Astor Rd. for .5 miles. Turn left and go south on S. Claybanks Rd. End at the site.
Nice easy walk, a lot of steps. But when you get down there it's awesome.
Very quiet. If you want a place to just connect with nature, as in trees, I would give it a 5. Fishing is catch and release, so bring your own food. If you hate furry creatures, this place is for you because you won't see any. Bring plenty of water because there's no fresh water there. The potty was clean and well stocked. The phones only worked sporadically. For one night there were other campers. They were quite and respectful. After that all we saw were people coming to fish. If you choose to camp here and need to go into town, the people at Shell were rude and unhelpful. However the folks at Dollar General went above and beyond to help us out, filling our 5 gallon water jug in the back because the outside spicket was off. (3 days in a row) I felt like I had a personal shopper with me. I was kinda in a rush because I had my dogs with me in the car and it was hot.
Great place to camp. Very quiet, minimal everything which maximizes it all. Great stairs to pierre Marquette. Wadeable.
