About Campground

Off grid glamping cabin for 2 adults. 325 square feet. Romantic, cozy, rustic and clean. Renovated 2021.

Fantastic location. Close to everything! Gorgeous mountain views just 5 miles from Big Bend national park and 15 miles from Big Bend Ranch State park. Only 7 miles to the lively ghostown of Terlingua and home of the original world class chili cookoff.

Mel's Place is private, quiet, feels remote yet only a mile or so to all the amenities you may need.

With some of the darkest skies in the country, the stargazing here is top notch. Maybe you will see the Milky Way for the first time.

Come to the desert and renew your spirit at Mel's Place!

Directions

From hwy 118, turn east onto Indian head rd. This is a dirt rd that may be bumpy, uneven or muddy at times.

High clearance is recommended.

Continue 1 mile.

Turn left at the sign for Mels Place.

Continue half a mile (through the big dry creek bed), stay right.

Go 400 ft and turn right at the CAMP sign. See property map and go to your reserved site. Continue straight if going to the CABIN.

The rd dead ends at the cabin. Enjoy!

Mel is an excellent host, the times I have stayed here there was only 1 other site with people, so it felt like I had the place to myself. Just about a mile from the hwy and gas station. Pay showers behind the motel as well which is next to the gas station

Mel’s place is absolutely stunning and she is a fantastic host. We came through as an Overland group and we’re able to get what in my opinion is one of the best spots on her property. The two ridge lines perfectly frame the Chisos Basin and the lighting at sun set is surreal. If you are looking for a place to camp that has great access to everything the Big Bend region has to offer stay with Mel. You will leave with part of your soul tethered to this place.

Beautiful place to experience wild camping while being very close to Big Bend National Park, we were able to use the showers of the nearby campsite 👍

Wonderful view of the mountains , the quietness and the privacy. We had a great time at our campsite, so close to town for supplies or if your going hiking to Big Bend. The tent was big enough for us 2 and the bedding inside the tent was great. We felt safe and comfortable at night. We loved the stargazing at night sitting by the camp fire after a long day of hiking. Highly recommend Mel's place if you are looking to camp and don't have a tent, there are mulitple camping sites available. Also if you just want to sit by the fire pit or even grill. Even the outhouse was clean and very decorative. Showers not available there but you can shower at the RV resort down the exit a few minutes away with a small $2 fee.

I absolutely love Mel's Place! Every time I stay here, I get a unique experience.. as with most places in the Big Bend area. However, Mel is what truly sets it apart from the rest. You can definitely expect big views and great hospitality here! We always bring our own ground tents or rooftop tents and a larger crew, and Mel always finds a way to accommodate us all.

I definitely recommend this place to everyone whenever I hear that someone is making a trip the area!
