We were there Oct 6-9. Fabulous colors. Conditions were very good. No problems forging the creek passings. Definitely a highly recommended trip!

NOTE: high clearance 4WD is required. No All Wheel Drive

The trail was pretty easy except for the washout 1/4mi from the summit on the dunes side (5ft deep ruts). That washout means business, and will toss you on your side if not careful. Would recommend disconnects and lockers if going up the pass towards westcliffe from the dunes. There was a Ford crossover rolled on its roof towards the begining of the trail from westcliffe, but easily passable. Only saw 1 group of jeeps the entire trip, and the colors are past their peak on the pass, but hitting peak at the dunes.

Great drive! Our trail rating said it was a green trail, but we didn’t think so. While it wasn’t hard it should not have been rated a green. Water crossing were super fun, and over all a great 4x4 trail leading into the Great Sand Dunes!
