Superb trail, an incredible experience through these mountains, each one as impressive as the next.
The North-South experience is a classic, much more motivating because we finish on the impressive Mt. Whitney.
As a teenager I did this hike in the early 2,000’s, with my uncle.. he’s recently developed Parkinson’s. I’d love to see it again or at least something before he gets any worse. For the most part, if you’re going.. the entirety of this trail could take over a week to complete start to finish. You can start on the backside up Whitney if that’s your goal. But, It passes though many different parks and the environment changes, there are bears and wildlife. You need a Garcia can, I believe they introduced them around the late 90’s.. Makes packing a pain. There are no restrooms (you will be 100’s of miles from anything). Best part is playing that Disk-man. Don’t take your pack off, lock your knees, or forget sunblock… and be prepared, Happy trails!
One of the best hiking experiences I had so far. It’s definitely a tough one if you are not a pro. We hiked up-to Nevada falls with our 5 month old in the carrier and it took 3 hours and 20 minutes from happy isle. Like I said, the hike is tough but it totally worths it. Take enough water and food with you. They have water refill station and restrooms at the foot bridge only. None of them at Clark point. We had gone out of water by the time we hiked up the Nevada falls. But the water from the stream seems pretty clean and we drank it and had no reaction afterwards.
