About Campground

The Jones Hole National Fish Hatchery is located 40 miles from Vernal in a beautiful sandstone canyon. The hatchery provides management and production of trout for mitigation of Colorado River Storage Project waters of the Upper Colorado River System and to meet Tribal trust responsibilities on Native American land. Fishing in Jones Hole Creek is open year round due to crystal clear spring water but access is limited in winter months. The trailhead of Dinosaur National Monument’s Jones Hole Creek Trail starts at the visitor parking lot. The hatchery is also a great place for bird and wildlife watching. Picnic tables are available near the visitor parking.

Directions

Jones Hole NFH is located approximately 41 miles northeast of Vernal bordering the Dinosaur National Monument.

I went to see the pectoglyphs, loved the view and drive. I did not realizing you could not drive all the way to the site or at least closer than the car park area. It was late and hot so just enjoyed the view.

I really wish they would have had a board there detailing the hike, distance to the rock shelter, and maybe a few images. There was nothing posted except details about the hatchery and requirements for anglers.

I have lived in the area for a while now. I have never been to a place that is such a surprise. You travel a few miles through some fairly desolate terrain. When you least expect it, the terrain changes and out of nowhere comes this awe inspiring deep canyon. The vistas are unreal and the canyon is one of the most picture worthy spots I've ever been. There are paths around the fish hatchery and paths for miles down the stream. Great place to visit!

Beautiful place to enjoy trail walking with the family. The trail starts at the hatchery and goes for about 4 miles. It runs along side a river with a backdrop of tall sandstone canyon walls. We visited on a Sunday so there wasn't a lot of people. They also have public bathrooms.

Staff inside the Hatchery is very engaging and great with kids & teens. It's been years since I've hiked to the Green River, but Ely Creek is fun with a little waterfall to play in. The kids we brought would sit at the top, blocking the water and then situp to have cascade over the person standing below.

Beautiful place. The pics are from early fall 2023. Hiking has some unlevel ground although easy for kids with good balance Saw bighorn sheep close to the river area.

The first part of trail has a stinging/blistering plant near the water. The 4 yo accidentally touched it and pain with blisters started but saline spray stopped the effect and he enjoyed the rest of the hike. Take Saline and a clean cloth just in case.
