Just like the Long Trail, the Vermont Appalachian Trail has shelters that can be used by hikers. Winturri Shelter, Stony Brook Shelter, Thistle Hill Shelter, and Happy Hill Shelter are all available on a first come, first serve basis for hikers to spend the night.
Group Use:
Groups hiking this portion of the Appalachian Trail may need an Outfitter Guide Special Use Permit from the Green Mountain National Forest. Gilford Woods State Park Campground, where the Appalachian Trail crosses VT 100, and Silver Lake State Park Campground, north of the AT off VT 12 in Barnard, are available for base camp hiking. Please refer to our Groups Hiking Page for more information.
Great place to spend the night while hiking the LT. There is a privy, bear box, firepit, wash pit for camp cookware, and a water source a short walk away (dumps into the pond). The shelter has a picnic table and lots of bunks including a loft. The pond is nice and you might ne able to take a canoe out on it. There is a beaver lodge across the pond from the caretakers campsite.
This is a large shelter and a good one. On my visit there were a total of 6 people in the shelter, myself included. It had room for roughly 3 times as many. Well cared for and no issues with pests when I was there. There is a fee of $5 to stay and well worth it for the privy and trail maintenance provided by ye Green Mountain Club. Sunrise and sunset on Stratton Pond are breathtaking.
I'd stay here whenever I hiked Stratton. Stratton Pond is a gorgeous spot, and the shelter is a rustic yet VERY sufficient spot to camp at, whether you're doing the Long/Appalachian Trail or just descending from Stratton's summit.
The Stratton Pond Shelter is a very nice shelter with bunk beds and a porch. Close to both Stratton Mountain and Stratton Pond. No tenting here--the tent area is .2 miles north of the shelter and is off of a side trail that's about 1/2 mile long.
Beautiful place, nice hike to get there from Stratton Arlington rd.
Disperse camping available for a small fee.Talk to care taker located near the AT shelter on site during spring to fall season.
Enjoy nature, help preserve it!
Peace.
