In the heart of the Pemigewasset Wilderness, Galehead Hut welcomes all who come in search of the ultimate White Mountain adventure or simply a quiet escape. Embark on day hikes to nearby Twin or Bond peaks, or string together a hut-to-hut hike to Galehead’s nearest neighbors 7 miles away. Our hearty breakfasts, home-cooked dinners, and lively croo won’t disappoint.
The summit is very underwhelming, no view and the mountain itself is not particularly impressive as a stand alone site. I recommend combining this trip with North and South Twin Mountains.
As one reviewer mentioned, you might as well do it if you made it to the hut but it’s really just a cairn at the summit and a nice overlook on the way there.
Just a hop skip and a jump from the Galehead hut (0.4 miles each way, and a couple hundred feet of elevation), there's no real reason not to hit the peak. In the summer, it's a completely wooded summit, with no views to speak of, though there is a nice open viewpoint just off the trail to the left as you're climbing. There are a couple of short steep sections, but nothing that's remotely daunting, if you've already made it in to the hut site.
In winter, however, the depth of snowpack raises you off the ground level enough that there are really nice open views up to the twins and in to the Pemi.
Great hike, about 10 miles loop. Trails blanketed in wet leaves, slippery rocks underneath all the leaves. Still pretty wet at the base, bits of snow towards the top! Go slow.
