About Campground

Timber Creek Campground is located about 8 miles north of the Grand Lake Entrance and is open year-round.  This campground is situated at 8,900 feet.  At the Timber Creek Campground, there are 98 first-come, first-served campsites and it has both tents-only and RV campsites.  Maximum RV/trailer length is 30 feet.  In the winter 19 sites are available.  The recent mountain pine beetle outbreak has resulted in the removal of most trees so there is no shade in this campground.  Each campsite has a picnic table, fire grate, tent pad, and parking for more than one vehicle.  More than one tent is allowed, as long as they fit on the tent pad.  Campsites are limited to 8 people.   Fires are allowed in the metal fire grates.  Gathering of firewood and fire-starting materials is prohibited.  In the summer, firewood may be purchased with cash at the campground firewood sales shed.

Directions

From Grand lake, Timber Creek Campground is approximately 8 miles north on Highway 34. You will be making a left hand turn into the campground. From Estes Park, take Trail Ridge Road (Highway 34 West) approximately 40 miles to the campground.

Quiet campground nestled in a valley with awesome star viewing at night. There is potable water and flush restrooms within a short walk of all campsites. Many trees are short, so not much shade. Firewood for sale.

This is a good spot for Rocky Mountain National Park when you are coming from the West. But they have a smaller fraction of the hikes nearby compared to the rest of the park compared to the Eastern campgrounds. There's only one trash area in the corner of the camping, so it can be kind of a hike, but it's best to get it on the drive out for the day. There's no showers either, there aren't enough bear boxes for each campsite, and the sites are all dense, so you can hear nearby camp site conversations.

Gorgeous campground on west side of Rocky Mountain National Park. It was full, but we still felt the peace and quiet of being in the wilderness. The trees are getting taller. We were in Site 65, Loop C. Good access to the bathroom across the road and through some trees - close but not too close!

Bathrooms clean and well stocked with toilet paper and soap. Ranger really nice and helpful.

We visited in early September, and were initially disappointed that we didn't see any elk, and then as we were packing up our tent a female moose walked straight through our site! We backed away and gave her space and she ambled off through the trees. It was such a wonderful moment!

We got so lucky because about 3 different reservations failed to show up, and we were able to grab a last minute camping spot at a beautiful national park campground. Our first time camping in a NP, and this experience turned it into a goal for the future. Everyone was so friendly, and the host was so pleasant to chat with and informative, and seemed to love to laugh. Absolutely loved sleeping under the stars, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by beauty. Waking up in the morning to go grab a coffee at the park dining hall was wonderful too - everyone seemed to have arrived that morning ready to hike while I showed up still half asleep, just taking it all in. Can't wait to do it again.

We lucked upon 4 nights at this campsite and it was an incredible experience. We had a walk-in tent site which was about 25 ft from our vehicle. There were elk roaming our campsite almost every night and into the morning with some standing and grazing within 20 ft of our tent. It was an incredible spot to be in the park. Can't recommend enough.
