This is a conveniently located campground with two loops located right along US Highway 160 4.1 miles west of South Fork, Colorado. The lower loop is comprised of Aspen and a few Ponderosa pines and includes all the tent sites. The upper loop circles a knoll above US Highway 160 with shade provided by mature Ponderosa pines. This loop also provides excellent views of the surrounding area and mountains. The south fork the Rio Grande River provides fishing opportunities just south of the campground down in the valley. The newly remodeled (2010) facilities include 13 campsites with tables and fireplaces, 2 vault type toilets, and adequate turn around and parking space for RV's. No drinking water or firewood is provided. Scroll down to Information Center for individual site descriptions.
Directions from South Fork, Colorado: Take U.S. Highway 160 4.1 miles southwest toward Pagosa Springs and Wolf Creek Pass. Turn left (south) into campground right off the Highway. Look for a large Brown and Cream colored sign.
Stopped in for an overnight camp at a modest elevation before going higher and ended up staying an extra night. The hosts (Russ and Patty) were delightful, and made the stay much more enjoyable.
Their website says they can accommodate larger rigs in some of the sites and that is true. The problem is nobody has trimmed the vegetation along the sides of the road loops and your going to scratch the sides of your rv or damage your roof.
We drive a 36 foot motorhome. There are many narrow spots and low hanging branches to look out for. The upper loop had too many obstructions for our motorhome. The lower loop was accessible but the road down to the lower loop is a little steep. The lower loop had 4 spots that would accommodate our rig. We would stay there again. Good AT&T / Verizon signal.
