Please ensure you bring enough water to serve your needs for the duration of your trip. Located off the Halfmoon Road (FSR 110), Elbert Creek is a first-come, first-served campground adjacent to the Mount Elbertand Mount Massive Trailheadsat 10,000 feet. This is a very popular campground for hikers. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and potable water. High altitude sickness may occur at this altitude. Please click on the link for a general map of the Halfmoon Creek Campgrounds. During the 2020 season, water will be temporarily unavailable at this campground. Please bring water for your camp, including enough water to completely drown your fire, leaving it cold to the touch, if you are having a campfire.
From Leadvile, travel south approximately 3 miles on US Hwy 24. Turn RIGHT on Colorado 300 at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery sign. Continue about 3/4 of a mile and turn LEFT at the Halfmoon Campground sign. Follow this road and turn RIGHT at the Halfmoon sign at the end of the pavement. This dirt road will lead to the Halfmoon East/West and Elbert Creek areas. (Note: This road is not maintained in the winter.)
This was beyond amazing we found the best spot on a dead end road so no camping neighbors.
We camped here for 4 days. This is a great place to camp if you are going to hike Mt.Elbert and Mt. Massive. Camp is right next to trail head. This camp has vault toilet and is very clean. This place is good for families and kids also. Out place was the first one on the left once you enter the campsite. It was kind of close to halfmoon Rd. There were quite a few ATVs driven on this road during late night and early mornings which disturbed the sleep. If possible, get a campsite on creek side instead of halfmoon road side.
I would rate it the best campground I ever stayed in. Huge sites. The camp is by the mountain river. It is first come first serve. Turnaround is high as people mostly use it for just one night before scaling Mt. Elbert, so there is always sites available during week days. By weekend it gets tougher.
Stayed there 5 days, scaled Mt. Elbert and Mt. Massive. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Camping is basic. It has one vault restroom and no running water (pump was not functioning), no showers. Having the river next to the tent solves the water issue.
We have been multiple times and we highly recommend staying here! Beautiful scenery😃
Hiking and fishing available at Emerald Lake. $8 per day for fishing at Emerald Lake. $22 per day to camp at Elbert Creek Campground. Vault toilets are available. Many campsites are on the creek. Plenty of shade available. You can hike the two tallest 14ers near this campground!
