From Whitewater (Jct. US 50 & CO 141), drive about 15 miles south on CO 141 to CR 26.10. A sign at the junction reads “National Forest Access. Divide Road. Uncompahgre National Forest”. Turn left onto CR 26.10 and proceed south about 6 miles to the junction of CR 26.10 and CR 24.40. Watch for the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area signs. Follow CR 24.40 about 5 miles to the campground. From Montrose to the US 50/CO 141 junction is about 52 miles northwest. Total distance about 63 miles. From Grand Junction, the US50/CO141 junction is about 8 miles east on US50. Caution: CR 24.40 is extremely hazardous in wet conditions. Watch for rockslides on the last 2 miles of road.
I go to this place because it is so quiet and serene. If you have kids they will love it because the stream is great for wading and the water is so clear you can see the little trout swimming around.
This is a sweet little somewhat primitive BLM campground. Still free but with no potable water and basic toilets. It does have a creek flowing through. Good hiking and mountain biking. Best in spring or fall as it gets hot.
Beautiful area, awesome hike/views, great ATV trails, water for the dogs! Seasonal closures on some of the trails and roads for larger vehicles till May but still many routes and roads to ride! We will definitely be back.
Nice campground if you realllly want to get away. A small couple of sites with a single but clean pit toilet. No potable water, but a flowing creek if you know how to filter/treat/boil your own. Seems to be a popular horse camp. The trail is very well-maintained, but not recommended for anyone who struggles with vertigo. Tons of small hike, bike, & utv trails throughout the wilderness area. My only downside was the size. If we had driven a dozen miles up & over a mountain and two other people were already camping there, it would have been disappointing to have to search for another dry camp.
