A hidden gem for sure! I have visited this area near Bedford, PA many times but this was the first time to Buchanan State Forrest and it will not be the last. I really enjoyed hiking Garlic and Sweet Root trails.
Beautiful location. A great place to go for a Sunday drive up the gravel road to where the old firetower used to stand. Also has several trails for hikes or horse rides. I wish it would have more clearings to take in the amazing views that could be had from the top.
Buchanan State Forest is wonderful because of not only its beauty but also because it is usually much less used than Forbes SF to the west. Much less foot traffic. Get a map and find routes as many offer incredible views, if found. The vista's aren't always marked so be ready any time you are climbing or ascending a mountain road!
