The park is definitely worth the stop if you're in the area. The park is nice and well maintained. The ruins of the dam are really cool, with a bit of local history (and some lessons on how not to build a dam). The huge chunks of aggregate in the concrete says a bit about how poorly engineered this thing was.
This place is such a cool find. We live about an hour and 40 mins away. We took a drive out the Coudersport pike and ended up the whole way out in Austin but it was WELL worth it. I never knew this place existed. The campground is perfect for a weekend getaway. It's clean, peaceful, tons of wildlife and you can tell the community really cares about this place!!
The dam collapsed in 1911 killing many innocent people, it's a good place to teach your children about hidden history of PA homeschool parents this is a MUST for a day field trip!
Always love going to the dam free camping good place to take ur dogs on a walk or a hike
Interesting place. It’s a tragedy what happened in Austin as a result of the dam failure. Be forewarned, the road is minimally maintained during the winter. We took my wife’s suv and had no trouble but I’m glad we had four wheel drive. If you’re not up for the exploring you drive right past the site on 872 so you can see the ruins without doing the exploring if you’re not up for it, but it’s definitely more impressive from the base of the dam.
