Fun little history break on the way to Borrego Springs. Stopped in the bookstore for some light reading ... All books are half price. Signed the geocache log and made a pit stop in the clean rest rooms.
Great no fee boondocking site with a pit toilet! Suitable for non 4wd vehicles, 7 miles outside of Borrego Springs.
At the end of the airport road and pretty hidden. The marker was all right but there were few things around that explained his life experiences. When I read that he had stolen Indian children and sold them that kind of turned me off. He was a very colorful person that's for sure.

We came in from the Salton Sea from hwy 86 south to route S22 Barrego Salton Sea Way west and into the Anza Barrego Desert State Park.
Along route 22 theres lots of geographic and scenic sites to see and Peg Leg Smith Historical Monument is a place to stop and enjoy the surrounding secenery! Great place for photos,IG's and enjoy!
There are pit toilets and places to dry camp if you desire at no cost.
Take Henderson Canyon Road to the famous Barrego Springs Serpent Sculpture and Galleta Meadows!
Or you can also continue on Peg Leg Road south to Palm Canyon Drive west into the city of Barrego Springs.
