Lovely area, all frozen in the winter when I drove past.
This scenic road is what got us extremely into researching alternative scenic routes to take instead of using larger freeways. It's beautiful especially when everything is covered in the snow. They did a very good job plowing the roads to keep them clear. We had to turn around halfway because only a portion of the road was opened.
It's interesting to visit and camp in the winter. 21oF, covered in thick snow, the lakes are frozen. Overcast, no star could be seen. A few roads and gates are closed. Part of it belongs to some gun club so we couldn't take that route as planned. We drove in after midnight, camped overnight in the freezing cold, and woke up to see everything whiter than Snow White. It's funny, because we came here, hoping to avoid the clouds but they followed us.
Super dry and windy on July 4th weekend, but very quiet. Our group camped overnight on the mountain top and only saw a few other people motorbiking during the day. The sunset and the starry night sky were spectacular. Bug spray is a necessary must. Dress warm as it was crazily windy one night, we thought one tent was going to get blown away.
