A couple miles up a very rough Swakane Canyon Road to the gate that prevents you from driving this scenic canyon trail. The hike is steep but the views are amazing. Along the trail in May was all kinds of wildflowers and the trail itself was littered with quartz and interesting rocks. About 3 miles up, the trail turns and continues on along the ridge for what looks like miles, but we stopped, had luck and just enjoyed the views. A fun hike providing great views of the river and surrounding areas.
Visited the site in early June. The road from 97 is a well maintained gravel road with some spectacular views along the way. Areas of previous fires have left lots of standing deadwood which now looks like something from a sci-fi movie. The campsite is decent but the surrounding area is amazing. Lots of great hiking and exploring as well as access to some fun 4 wheel drive trails like 4W312.
If you follow NF-9712, it says it is 21 miles to Wenatchee, but in early June, we ran it for around 10 miles and then hit snow....lots of snow.
