About Campground

Overview

Nestled between two deep clear lakes, Luna-White Deer Campground provides a north woods experience where you can hear the call of the loons at night and see lots of wildlife by day. Half of the campsites front on the two non-motorized lakes. A four-mile trail with great vistas circles the two lakes.

Recreation

The lakes provide visitors ample opportunities for non-motorized boating, swimming and fishing. Anglers can expect a catch of largemouth bass, rock bass, perch, pumpkinseed and bluegill in both lakes as well as rainbow trout in White Deer Lake. A four-mile-long trail circles the two lakes and connects with over 30 miles of additional trails, including the Anvil National Recreation Trail. A variety of wildlife make its home in the area including resident American bald eagles in the towering pines along the shore and loons, which call into the night.

Facilities

The campground offers 37 single family campsites, available for tent or RV camping. The campground offers both first-come, first-served campsites as well as sites which can be reserved in advance. Sites are equipped with tables and fire rings with grills. Vault toilets and drinking water are available throughout the campground.

A quiet and scenic gem in the Nicolet that's well worth the drive. Luna-White Deer luckily avoided the axe as a number of nearby National Forest campgrounds closed due to budget cuts.

There is lots of nice hiking here, and trails are directly connected with the campground. Visitors can hike a full loop around both lakes and connect directly into the larger Hidden Lakes trail system. Those seeking a lengthy hike can trek as far as as Franklin Lake campground and the Anvil Lake trails.

Some sites on the property can be reserved on the federal recreation website during peak season, others remain first-come first-served.

The campground is nestled between two otherwise undeveloped lakes. Several of the lakeside campsites have spectacular views.

Swimming is available at a beach within the campground, and lake frontage is swimmable at some of the campsites. The spot is popular with fishermen. Drinking water is available from a solar well. Lots of nice road biking routes are also accessible from the location.

While you’re in the area, you can visit several once-thriving national forest campgrounds that are about to be dismantled and decommissioned as the forest cuts back on expenses. Sevenmile Lake and Windsor Dam are both within biking distance, and the former campground at Brule River is just a short drive northeast.

Nice campground between 2 lakes. Do not suggest sites 11-22. Wind blows in off Lake Luna and unable to actually enjoy campsite. Went mid June and most campers in this area stayed in their campers/tents. Do not have sites actually on lake, hiking trail between campsite & lake. Luna Lake very weeded at shore so could not fish, White Deer steep incline to lake but Sandy. Campsites are spaced perfectly apart so each site is semi private, not squished in. Pit toilets kept clean but doors do not close properly. Only water available was at spout on White Deer side. Hand pump on Luna side out of service. Lakes are totally non motorized, so kayak, paddle or row boats only. So if a fisherman, suggest going over to Butternut to fish.

Really great campground. We had site 7 which might be the best site at the grounds. The fishing was really good and the campground was quite. It was such a nice surrounding and I wish we would have had more than the two nights we had. I would highly recommend this campground!

Great campground. Camp host was great. Friendly and did a great job with the pit toilets and keeping the sites clean. There's great hiking trails accessible from the campground. The sites that border the two lakes have direct access to them. Lake has a no gas motor restriction so it makes it great for kayaks and light boats.
