One road up to top. They have a gate that was closed , so be aware you may not be able to drive to top of mountain.

Steep and Rocky but good hiking for those fit enough to do it. Public Access is limited, check your maps before planning a hike.

Outside of hunting season, Short Mountain WMA is very much overlooked. But when the hunters are gone and the woods are quiet, Short Mountain provides a wonderful opportunity for hiking, birdwatching, enjoying nature. 8000 acres of mountain and valley, woodland and wetland. 4 stars because of lack of accessibility. Only one road in unless you can access from the surrounding private properties.

Recommend 4 wheel drive vehicle only. Major wind storm has taken many trees down near the top. The road is open, but is currently being worked on. Beautiful view at the top near the campsites. Slow going due to poor road conditions.

This place would have been very cool, and it is supposed to be a public access area for hiking, shooting, fishing and wilderness camping. The State of West Virginia should do an investigation, because someone has chained it up. Yet there are fresh tire tracks behind the locked gate. That tells me that some local people are using this state facility as their private playground. Some locals I spoke with confirmed the same. What a shame. Very disappointed, after I drove 125 miles to access this public area. Remove the gate!!
