From MN 61 at Silver Bay: Turn at the traffic light on MN 61 at Silver Bay. You will be on Co 5, also called Outer Drive, or the Superior National Forest Scenic Byway. Drive through Silver Bay. The road name will change several times even though you will be on the same road. The Superior National Forest Scenic Byway will remain constant. Follow the Scenic Byway, and you will end up on Co 15. Continue for approximately 18 miles to Co 2. Turn right (north) on Co 2, drive 15 miles. Turn left on Sand Lake Road. A short distance down Sand Lake Road, veer left onto the two track road labeled Sand Lake Access. There is a camping icon with an arrow at this intersection. The campground is at the end of the road.
Rustic is the key word here. If you don't like rustic stay away, if you do you will love it. New pit toilet under construction, should be in operation for 2023 season.
It is usually a great place to camp. But because of the drought and weird weather systems there were a ton of biting horse/deer flies this time.
Great campsite in the Superior National Forest. Some cabins near by but mostly secluded. There are two fire pits, two picnic tables and a vaulted toilet. Biggest complaint was the sheer number of horse flies. Not really large enough for an RV but some campers and tents worked perfectly.
Small camping area sufficient for at least several tents spread out, or potentially a couple RVs. Two large picnic tables on-site. There is a bathroom that was clean. Access to the lake consists of a couple gentle wide steps which are suitable for putting in a canoe/kayak. No trailer access here.
