With it being off season, this was one of the only campgrounds in Custer state park that was open. The attendant quickly came over to greet us as we pulled into our spot. We booked online and that process was a breeze. Drank my tea by the river in the early morning and watched a few deer strolling by. The camp spot was level and dry. The restrooms were the most maintained and clean restrooms I have experienced at any state camping facility. The entrance to the “wildlife loop” is right around the corner and you must do it! It is an is an extra $20 but SO worth it if you haven’t experienced seeing wildlife in this area.
Very nice campground, clean shower and restroom facilities. Buffalo right next to the campground. Lots to see and lots to do! Highly recommended!
Great family style campground. Beautiful and scenic location in the Black Hills. Sites are pretty tight together, but still very nice. The sites along the creek and pond are very nice with shaded trees and nice views and sounds of the creek and pond. The campground has nice and clean bathrooms with flush toliets and showers. There is also a very nice and newer playground for kids to play on. There is swimming in the pond, however it looks pretty stagnant and mucky. We did not swim and never saw anyone else swim on out 5 days we camped. The general store is only a short drive away and is fully stocked with necessities such as groceries, firewood, ice and tons of souvenirs. They also have a little ice cream stand as well. The Custer State Park visitor center is located across the street from the campground as well. Campsite pictured is 53E.
Our site was nice, but a bit middy muddy compared to other areas (17E). There was a laundromat, playground, 2 bathrooms, and at least 2 locations with potable water. Most sites had electric hookups. Bathrooms were very nice, each had 3 shower stalls, 3 toilet stalls, and 2 sinks. It never seemed to be busy. We saw Bison right outside the fence. About 30 minutes from Sylvan lake, which is where we chose to hike a few times, but right down the road from Lover’s Leap. We had our dog along as it is dog friendly, but I’m not sure on the leash rules as I did see a few people with off leash dogs, one which charged at another dog, so if there are leash rules, they must not be strict.
