About Campground

The Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp, maintained by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, lies just a stone's throw from the entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. The camp provides great access to the state-managed Elbe Hills and Tahoma State Forests through the Nicholson Horse Trail System. Campground has 20 campsites, picnic tables, hitching rails, and vault toilets.

The Nicholson Horse Trail System has been maintained especially for equestrian use, with wide trails and sturdy bridges providing safe, enjoyable passage for all.

Directions

Take State Route 7 to Elbe, then head east on State Route 706 for about 6 miles. Signage for the horse camp will direct you to a left turn, where the campground is easily found.

Haven’t stayed her YET. Scoped this out for a future stay. Large campground with plenty of sites. Has a group site that can be reserved as well. Half sites have signs that say reserved for horse campers. M-F only until 8pm, then it’s open to all.

This is NOT a horsey camper only campground.

Very Nice Horse camp facility. We go up camping a few times a year. Sometimes we go up for the day. The trails are really nice. You can go for a short ride or go all day. Yup, I'll love the place.

Horse park is free. Trails are great! rock free means can be muddy in spots when it rains a lot.

Bring cart to transport water (not in each campsite) port a potty bathrooms, no showers.

Great place to camp with stock, we have horses. The sites are well maintained and large but not too private. Trails are nice but rocky and steap in places.

Very well maintained camp ground with plenty of room to highline horses. Clean bathroom and water for the horses if you didn't bring any. It rained while I was there so didn't get a chance to really hit the trails but the ones I did go on were well marked and maintained. Lots of gunfire from the grave pit that is close by so make sure your horses are okay with that.
