Plan to enjoy all the park offers by camping overnight. Two campgrounds at Roy Lake State Park provide electrical and basic sites, modern comfort stations with showers and flush toilets and dump station. Snuggle into a charming camping cabin that sleeps four in a set of bunk beds and double bed. Savor a meal outdoors cooked on the grill and served at the picnic table. We've been coming to Roy Lake every summer when my parents camp. It's beautiful. Clear water, beach like shores, not real rocky. Nice campgrounds and facilities.
3 stars falls short of many other reviews. The reason I'm so harsh is simple, pad slopes. They have made a campground on hills so to make a level(ish) camping pad they have dumped truck loads of gravel. To get one side level with the other there is a four foot drop. To walk from our camper to picnic table or fire pit we have to traverse a ball bearing steep slope. The gravel has quarter size round rocks and it is dangerous. I feel that way and 2 other campers (only 3 of us at this campground) feel the same way.
Having said that, grounds are clean. Bathrooms are clean. There are no garbage bins anywhere in the campgrounds itself. Possibly some bins at the entrance/exit. 50, 30 amp and 110 service, EMS system shows no errors. There is water but no way to connect a hose with a filter. You have to place a container under the spout and push and hold a button to discharge water...PAIN! Lots of room for kids to run and play at the playgrounds. Lake is nice and access very reasonable. We've seen deer tracks but no deer yet. Turkeys are very abundant. Paved road to campgrounds and paved roads inside campgrounds as well. Many mature trees that provide very nice shade. Large sturdy aluminum picnic tables. Oh, also campsites are nicely distanced from one another. Not many mercury lights so night time is dark around campground, stars are bright and amazing. Dump stations at entrance/exit of park.
I camped with my mom for a couple of nights so we could attend a nearby family reunion. Due to mobility issues, she needed an electric spot and reserved one that was identified as disabled, which was perfect. All of the spots are a nice distance from each other, so you don't feel cramped and you can enjoy yourselves - you can't even hear neighboring campers' music or conversations. It's a short walk (or drive) to the swimming area. The bathrooms do include heated showers! I have just loved staying up to 9:30 to watch the sunsets! I would definitely love to return here (I currently live in AZ).
A great park with a fantastic lake and accommodations. PS east park is perfect for those looking for a stay that is more quiet. Take the kids over to explore the island or head to Sica Hollow!
