From Colorado Springs, go 8 miles southwest on Old Stage Road and 5 miles on Gold Camp Road. Turn right on FDR 381 for 1/2 mile. The campground is on the left side of the road.
Never actually camped there, always around the general area.
Location is right near a spot that is frequented by shooters (legally). Don't expect a peaceful day of nature sounds without the occasional gunshot.
As I am a part of that, I also apologize.
Gun shots and ATV's make up a good chunk of the background noise here. Good amount of litter too. But hiking away from the campground takes you through some good nature and the noise calms down at night. It's a free car camping spot right outside of the springs so it's ok.
The road to get up to the campground is not for cars without 4 wheel drive. The campground is closed for now, and some of the trees in the area have been used as target practice. If it were open though it would be a great place to camp in a beautiful location.
Camped here in April of 2013. Nice site, no water but they do have outhouses. You can't make reservations, and the weekend we were there a boyscout group and a church group piled in. Even though there are only about 15 "sites", this appears to be largely ignored when large groups show up. Nice area overall, enjoyed the drive up. Good hiking all over the area.
There's no running water, but there are outhouse-type facilities. The location is nice and heavily wooded and there are maybe 16-20 tent sites. Some people who use the site don't pack out their trash as they should and so some sites have quite a bit of litter. The road there is a bit bumpy if you're coming from Colorado Springs.
