In the summer months, this sparkling lake in the Cascades is a great place to fish, paddle (no motorized boats allowed), hike and mountain bike. While the clear waters might seem tempting to jump in to, the nearly freezing temperature of the lake makes it unsuitable for swimming. A picnic shelter, built by the Civilian Conservation Corp, is at the day use area near the resort. Osprey and bald eagles, and native cutthroat trout call the lake home. Non-native rainbow and brook trout are also found in the lake. The "lake born of fire," is the headwaters of the McKenzie River and was formed 3,000 years ago when lava from Sand Mountain reached the river and backed up water to form the lake. The original forest lining the riverbanks was submerged. Remnants of some of these submerged trees still stand under 120 feet of water and are visible from the trail and by boat. From McKenzie Bridge, OR, travel east on Highway 126 for 18 miles to Clear Lake.
A friend of mine that lives in Albany Oregon, took me on this amazing five mile hike around Clear Lake, It was absolutely awesome, the hike itself, even though it's 5 miles was fairly easy, with the usual stops here and there on the trail to observe the beauty of it all It took us about 2 and 1/2 hours, It was breathtaking, the lava field was amazing I've never seen actual lava rock that was created and flowed trouble volcano. I would highly suggest to anybody that is down in that area to take a good hard look at going on this hike, as the Glory of God will surrounded you,as it did me!
Visiting from California stopped by for a pretty decent hike. It wasn't too bad I guess it's 5 miles. It seems longer because of the zigzag your gonna do around the Lake. Bring good shoes The other side of the lake, there are some spots that Have lava rock. It's fun, it's good. Enjoy it . I would definitely come back in summertime and use the lake.
