Partially developed picnic and dispersed camping area nestled next to the waterfalls called Bluff Springs. A short trail exists just beyond the bridge that will take you up and over the waterfalls as well as another trail (Willie White Spur T112) that follows and old railroad grade to the east.
Take the Sunspot Highway (NM6563) located just 2 miles south of Cloudcroft about 8 miles and turn left (east) onto the Rio Penasco Rd, county road C017. This road is paved up to Water Canyon, then dirt the remainder of the way. Continue on the dirt portion for another 1.5 miles and Bluff Springs will appear on your right.
Waterfall is deceiving in size. People camping upstream were clearly adding contaminants to water, I was very disappointed. There was no organized camping area and bathrooms were nasty. Mother nature was absolutely stunning and broke my heart to see people were ignorantly destroying the gifts of nature.
Great waterfall to visit. To get there is a long dirt/rocky road. Lots of grazing cows on the road so you must take it nice and slow. Once you get there, hiking the stairs to find the source of the waterfall is fairly easy. Was able to do it with out 4, 6 and 13 year old boys. They loved the little river and we continued to follow until until we found where it came out of the mountain. It was amazing. So happy we made the drive out to find it.
Beautiful place to visit, very fun for all the family members no matter how is your physical health you can enjoy having hiking the trail or enjoying the base of the mountains where the water falls collects.
Nice view and going about the time they have snow and ice covering the ground
