Sprague Creek is a small campground located on the northeast shore of Lake McDonald, just off Going-to-the-Sun Road. Towed units (vehicle plus unit) and RVs exceeding 21 feet are not permitted in this campground. The campground is located within trees, providing shade during warm summers. Some sites near the shore have unobstructed views of Lake McDonald. Reservations are required to camp at Sprague Creek Campground. Click the reservation button below for details.
From town: Go 10 mi NE on Going-to-the-Sun Rd.
Please Note: This is more of a review of the campsite host. The actual campsite was great. The beach area was gorgeous.
It all started just before sunset. We were spending time in the park, which is absolutely stunning, when we made our way to this campsite. Eager to take photographs of the impending setting sun, we made our way to the beach. After setting up tripods and getting all of our settings just right, we began taking crisp photos of the amazing views. We were quickly greeted, all but pleasantly, by a frail Park Volunteer. She advised us that we would not be allowed to take our all-desired photos of the beautiful landscape. We pleaded with her and reluctantly stated, "ten minutes." The sunset was approaching and entered golden hour. As we were frantically getting all the shots we could, she returned. "You've overstayed your welcome," she stated. We thanked her profusely for allowing us minutes to attempt to capture such a stunning sight. She responded with "is this yours?" as she picked up a piece of plastic many yards away from us, obviously left behind by a person who has no self-respect, respect for others or the earth. As I responded to her question "no," She turned and walked away. The bitterness in this woman's voice, the sheer unpleasantness and the lack of decent people skills caused me to write this review. It left me wondering how many others have been negatively impacted by interactions with this woman. We left the beach without any photos of the actual sunset.
A message to Joan: I truly do not understand how you can be in such an awe-inspiring place and have such a lack of joy. I hope you find your peace and enjoy the time you have left on this earth. I plead with you not to steal someone else's pleasant memories again.
A nice site that is well kept and clean. There are dedicated car camping sites ($20/night) that are ALL first-come first-serve, so make sure to come super early to secure your site! There are also 3 sites dedicated to those without vehicles (bicyclists/hikers) and those are only $5/night.
This is right on the edge of Lake McDonald which is a nice cool temperature, and there are dedicated bathrooms and portable water pumps. Furthermore since there are no electricity hookups and no areas for RVs, then it's also nice and quiet!
The Sprague Creek campsite where we stayed gave us privacy and great views of Lake McDonald. It’s just a short drive north of the visitor center and is unique in that it does not offer RV access which provides more peace and quiet. If you plan on staying there during the summer months you need to arrive early to ensure you find a spot. On the campground website they will list when the campgrounds fill each day which is helpful. This site along with others is based on a first come first served basis only so be sure to plan ahead and arrive early to get a good campsite. This location also offers a nice private beach behind the campsites which is a great spot to look at the sunset across Lake McDonald. Since it still sits on the lake it also makes it convenient to get around since it is close to several attractions!

Small campground next to Lake McDonald. You will have quite a bit of road noise and the bear boxes are awkwardly spaced, making it feel like you are in a neighbor's spot and using their box. Lots of shade and a trail down to the lake for easy access.
Great little campground in Glacier National Park. It is about a mile south of Lake McDonald Lodge and situated between Going To The Sun Road and Lake McDonald so you do hear the road traffic but you have amazing views of Lake McDonald and access to the lake. The bathrooms are clean and there is potable water. The campsites are nice, some better than others. The other half of the campground is a picnic area. It has a couple of kayak/canoe/sup launch sites. Overall a very laid back and quiet campground. And the camp host, Jane, is very friendly, helpful and wonderful. So far it is my favorite campground in Glacier!
