Black SandyState Park is located 7 miles north of Helena on I-15, then 4 miles east on Secondary 453, then 3 miles north on county road.
Almost thought the ice was thick enough to drive on after a week of -20 temps. Only 6-9 inches wide due to moving water underneath. Beautiful and peaceful spot in my neighborhood. Glad to have such a nice park so close by.
Wonderful place to camp. All the camp hosts were very pleasant. The vault bathroom was immaculately clean.
Awesome spot near Helena to get on the water. There's an overlook trail as well that has some good views. Free for in-state license plates.
You can't go wrong with this lakeside park. It has everything you could possible need. Beautiful tent camp spots, nice RV pads, boat slips for $6 night, trees on a black sandy shoreline, fish, a little check in station with ice and incidentals, a camp host to help you after hours, nice bathrooms and views for days. Dog and kid friendly, wheelchair accessible to most areas, and very friendly parks officials.
Our family stayed here a while ago, in our trailer. It was our maiden voyage, and we needed to figure out how the trailer was, and what we might need for longer trips, etc..
First off Black Sandy is a great location, we had a spot literally right on the water in front of the ropes swimming area, and my girls had a blast swimming and enjoying themselves. We had a campfire and roasted marshmallows and enjoyed our time.
We had power for our trailer, but I took one star off because there was no water or dump station. The main thing we figured out on this trip was that with two adults and three children, Water is a 100% must. We actually ran out of water in the evening late, and since we only lived a mile away, we drove home. Now we only go where there is full service of electricity, water, and a dump station.
For anyone else, though, that doesn’t have so many people, this is an ideal place to take a small vacation and we recommend it highly if you don’t need a water connection.
