This isolated, quiet, family type camping area is located on the east side of Hovey Lake. It is a good place for canoeing, bird watching, or just enjoying nature¿s surroundings. There are 4 campsites, each with a table and fire ring. Toilets and drinking water are available. Swimming conditions in this lake are not good due to shallow water and the mucky bottom. Some northern pike, black bass, and panfish can be caught here. The 99 acre Hovey Lake is the headwaters of the Indian Wild and Scenic River and offers good trout fishing. There is a carry-in boat access near the entrance of the campground.
From the intersection of M-28 and M-94 drive southwest on M-94 6.4 miles to Forest Road 2254. Turn left (south) and drive 4 miles southeast on FR 2254 to Forest Road 2473. Turn right (south) on 2473 and drive 0.5 mile to FR 2367 where you turn right (west) and continue to the campsites.
Beautiful, private, serene, has a vault toilet, close to the Buckhorn for food if I'm too tired to cook, it's the perfect quiet get away!
Great lakeside sites, only 4 or so marked dispersed, free with fire ring and picnic table.
3 to 5 spots with fire ring and picnic table, some large enough to share. Vault toilets and cold water pump. Quiet and right on the lake. Popular site with locals. Bugs were not much of an issue. Would absolutely stay again
The campground is nice. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring (although I couldn't locate a fire ring in one site) and there are outhouses. Unfortunately, free camping seems to translate to a place to party and act stupid into all hours of the night. This is not great for people like me who wanted a quiet place to relax. If you see multiple cars in a site and you're not wanting to be kept up all night by drunken morons, then you may want to invest in a site at a nearby campground instead.
