Flowing Well Campground is situated along the western banks of the Sturgeon River, among large trees and a variety of wildflowers. Camping, fishing, picnicking and canoeing can be enjoyed in a serene setting.
The area is most popular for canoeing and other non-motorized boating, as the Sturgeon River Canoe Trail runs right through the campground. The trail weaves with the river through a 41-mile portion of the heavily wooded Hiawatha National Forest. There are various access points along the river.
Fishing is also popular, with brook trout, steelhead and salmon found in the river.
The campground offers less than a dozen spacious sites for tent and RV camping. Some sites are situated along the bank, overlooking the slow-moving river.
Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings, and most come equipped with grills as well. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. The water from the well has a heavy iron and sulfur content, which is an acquired taste, but is safe to consume.
A group picnic area is also equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. It is adjacent to a good-sized parking area. Vault toilets and drinking water are also available.
The campground is sandwiched between Forest Highway 13 and the Sturgeon River, in the lower portion of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is about 10 miles from the northern shores of Lake Michigan. The region is dotted with wildflowers and mature trees.
From Rapid River, Michigan, take U.S. 2/Lakeshore Drive east for 16 miles, then continue north on Forest Highway 13 for 2 miles.
Very quaint and peaceful campground, only 6 sites to camp at , a few with great views of the river nearby.. light traffic audible but nothing terrible like I read in other reviews. The well was really pretty and I had a great time !
We camped with tents for 3 days. We had 4 tents, we were 7 people, and we had plenty of space. The background noise of the river is nice but during the day you will hear the trucks passing through the nearby road. No showers and no lumber sold at the place, although you could self serve buy lumber 10 mins away by car going north on road NF-13. Mosquitoes were pretty bad in August.
My wife and I stayed here with our two dogs on Memorial Day weekend 2022.
The campground was well maintained. The sites were not packed together, but we could still see our neighbors.
The campground is near a road, but traffic was minimal during the day and almost non-existent at night.
Each site has a picnic table and fire ring; the fire ring has a grill you could swing to hang off the side and leave the pit open or set over the fire for cooking and boiling water.
The restroom was a single-occupancy vault toilet. It was clean and odors were not an issue.
The picnic area had a couple picnic tables and grills. Additionally, there was a spigot but I either did not know how to operate it or the spigot was broken. We ended up getting water from the flowing well and filtered/boiled before use to be safe. Water from the well was clear, but smelled slightly of sulfur.
The surrounding area is marshland, so bugs and mosquitoes are heavily present. A good fire will keep the bugs away and a little bit of bug spray will pretty much eliminate issues with the pests.
Some maps of the campground show 10 sites, but the campground only has 6 sites.
The area is beautiful and the sites are nice, bad mosquitos so plan accordingly.
Really disappointed in the upkeep, USF contracts with vista recreation to maintain it but they aren’t doing much.
User stated last year the water was broken, it’s still broken.
Stayed a whole week, and they only refilled the toilet paper once, it was out by the third day during a holiday weekend. Luckily I had my own.
No trash, a small trash can by the day use area, all the campers piled their bags up around it and it stunk.
For the money it should be better.
