Visitors to Coyote Camp can enjoy an out-of-the-way camping area within the National Red Dirt Wildlife Management Preserve. Although this camp is a designated hunter's camp, it can be utilized year around by general forest visitors. Very primitive site with limited facilities. There is OHV access to the Sandstone Trail.
From the intersection of I-49 and Highway 6 (Natchitoches), drive west on Hwy 6 for 4 miles. Turn left (south) on Louisiana Hwy 117 and proceed 16 miles to Forest Highway 59, Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway. Turn left (east) on FH 59 and go 9.5 miles to Forest Road K18E. Turn left (north) on K18E and go 0.3 mile to the camp.
Good camping. Nice views. Three clearly defined fire rings, no marked campsites. Just a drive going in with a loop at the end.
Great free camp site, Rangers checked on us, had some neighbors, Nice pit toilet. Cleaner than when I arrived.
Came here in early may. No one here at all. Amazing weathers. Not many bugs. Small breeze. Tall trees, beautiful bird sounds and insect sounds. Secluded. Clean vault bathroom. No water or electricity. Lush green build up around the trees with vines growing up the trees. Beautiful?
It's super quiet here. Haven't seen anyone or even heard a vehicle all evening. Good clean bathroom, but nothing else for amenities so bring what you need.
It's the first of May and the whipoorwhils and fireflies are putting on a show!
Sufficiently close to the Alexandria superchargers for overnight climate control in a Tesla Model S charged above 35kWh. Nearby trails require additional driving. Electric outlets, potable water and flush toilets unavailable. Eco friendly, arthropod-proof, composting toilets available, albeit odorous. Fireflies in elaborate courtship displays after sunset. Area shared with ATV campers.
