The campground loop trail allows easy access to the main trailhead. A trailhead parking area, found at the east end of the campground provides parking for day use. Over 50 miles of trails and closed roads are available from the campground.
From Woodland, WA take state Route 503 east for approximately 28 miles to Forest Road 81. Take a left on Forest Road 81 towards Kalama Horse Camp Recreation Area. Follow Forest Road 81 north for approximately 8 miles.
Good horse camp, corrals stock water. Trails by river, to the beautiful waterfall, etc. are well maintained, with help of Back Country Horsemen of Washington, Mt Saint Helens chapter. Only negative is the condition of the road, lots of dips. Forestry received funding to repave by next year (2024). Until then, drive about 20mph to give yourself time to slow down/avoid the rough parts.
Don't have horses but wanted to camp near a bathroom. Pit toilets were very clean, hosts were friendly and helpful. There was no one else there midweek in July. Pretty hike along the river. Peaceful place even though it's close to the road. About 30 minutes drive to Ape Cave. No cell reception.
This place is beautiful in the snow. Took the family up here to not be so crowded while everyone was in search of fun snow areas. Make sure you have a discovery pass though so you don't get a ticket.
First time here. Wife and Fer friend wanted to go horse camping. Reserved to spots. Some great spots and some cool trails with views. Will come back again
This review is specific to the Toutle Trail and for hikers only..
First of all, McBride Lake no longer exists. There is simply a sandy, dry hole where it used to be and no clear way to get down there.
Second, this trail is tough and mostly because of the terrain. You might as well take a 9 mile stroll through the deep, soft sand at the coast. That being said, we only encountered one other hiker along the trail.
All in all, not a favorite, would not do again, and likely would not recommend.
Again, this is only specific to the Toutle Trail, whose trailhead happens to be within the Kalama Horse camp.
The restroom within the camp was very clean, parking was easy and the guests I encountered were very friendly.
