Three campsites on Josephus Lake, near the border of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Sites include picnic tables and fire rings; campground also includes a vault toilet. Hiking trail from campground heads west into the wilderness, branching out through a lake-filled region before reaching the Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Salmon River. The lake is too small for motorboats.
From Stanley, go north 17 miles on Highway 21 and turn on forest road 008. The campground is about 18 miles north on forest road 008.
Beautiful mountain lake that is worth the drive! Rough road, not recommended for cars. Definitely want something with some ground clearance.
*Be advised* The road is narrow, bumpy, incredibly rocky & there's about 18 miles of it. It took about an hour & a half to drive it.
There are 3 main campsites. They were all taken when we got there. Fortunately we were able to cross a shallow river in our truck to get to a different section with a few more campsites. There was no bathroom on that side.
The lake is small, but very pretty, clear & peaceful, good for paddleboards. There were lots of trees.
This is a must do destination. You will definitely want to take a vehicle with good ground clearance. This would also be a great spot for a weekend tent camping trip as there are several small camping spots with fire rings.
