I live on the Holston River and I love it. A lot of fly fishing and good trout in certain areas when the river level is low. Must contact TVA to see when they will be opening gates and how many gates to find out what the water level will be below Cherokee Dam.
The Holston is an extremely clean river! It's one of the most peaceful kayaking experiences and great for fishing as well. One of my all time favorites.
I've been going to Nance's ferry for many years. They have a boat ramp & a small area you can walk out into the river to swim in the cool, clean water or wade out & fish. Be careful & pay attention to the water levels rising (usually 4pm & later) & it could be dangerous if you aren't aware of this. When the Cherokee damn opens the flow of water goes into the river, it takes several hours to reach Blaine river access points, Then by morning, the water level has gone back down. This is a great place to put in your boat & a beautiful river to fish.
One of my favorite float rivers... beautiful waters and fish! Getting overcrowded though, suggest that you book your float trip early and try not to go over weekends.
You will find a lot of Peace on this beautiful River, spend as much time as you can on that River. I have lived around that River for 62 years since I was born and when I was in school I fished there a lot me and my uncle my daddy and my father-in-law we've all fished on that River and eat fish out of that River
