Hā’ena State Park is located at the northwestern extent of Kuhio Highway on Kauai’s north-shore. The park offers viewing of restored lo’i kalo (taro field, as well as, the spectacular Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park. The park also offers beach-related activities including shore fishing and swimming at Ke’e Beach. Hā’ena is also home to the trailhead of the world famous Kalalau Trail [11 miles], as well as, Hanakāpīʻai Falls trail [4 miles].
Wonderful hike. Hanakapi’ai beach was amazing and we even saw a monk seal! My kids loved playing in the little lagoon, where they were protected from the ocean. The hike was strenuous, but it wasn’t too bad. I would highly recommend bringing water shoes as there is a stream crossing.
Beautiful and secluded beach. I believe you can make a reservation for this secluded beach or pay at the entrance. Tons of parking spots and a clean bathroom.
I arrived there after 5pm so my family went in for free. No pets allowed also.
Unbelievable views and well maintained. The hike is not for amateurs or young children--there's a lot of uphill climbing, wet and slippery sections, and rocky parts to navigate, plus crossing of up to four streams. Highly recommend grippy, covered-toe water sandals--if it has rained in any capacity over the days prior to your hike, they will be filthy by the end guaranteed! We only (!!!) hiked the 2.2-mile (one way) stretch down to the second beach (where it was not recommended we swim or snorkel because the waves were rough), and that took us about 2.5 hours each way--note that we are in our 50s and in decent shape but we're no gym rats. My teenage son pulled ahead of us a number of times and probably could have done the hike in 1.5 hours each way, but he has a lot more energy and is quite athletic. The beach we ended at was breathtaking and there was a small cave there, too!!! Also, we took the shuttle from the Waipa Park and Ride and, based on the roads and parking situation we saw along the way in the shuttle, that was a great choice--the roads between the park and ride and the park entrance were narrow, winding with blind corners, and congested, plus the staff running the shuttle were very friendly and knowledgeable. The whole experience was seamless and efficient: well run and well organized. Kudos to them! All in all, it was a fantastic experience and we'd do it again...even though we're feeling the effects this morning--my calves!!! 😁
